Tell the DOJ: Release updates on all investigations before Trump takes office
.
BREAKING NEWS: The Department of Justice just released a scathing report on Chicago police confirming what we already knew existed: widespread and systemic racism. There are other ongoing civil rights investigations--including on the killing of Alton Sterling--that could uncover more injustice. But if Jeff Sessions takes office, he would decimate it all.
Sessions' Senate confirmation hearing was scary. And Trump takes office in 7 days.
We're already seeing the dangers that lie ahead with Sessions at the front of the Department of Justice. After being asked what it feels like to be called a racist, Sessions brushed it off as a consequence of being from the South and said “I know discrimination existed” referring to it in the past tense. Not that it’s breathing and alive in our country today, but something that “was” wrong some time ago.
We all know that’s a lie and it’s dangerous.
Right now, the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department is conducting dozens of investigations probing exactly what Jeff Sessions just said was a thing of the past: discrimination. The Department just concluded its investigation into the notorious Chicago police department and found rampant patterns of racism. But there are still important investigations pending including the killing of Alton Sterling and the horrific conditions in Alabama prisons. And one thing is clear: Sessions would destroy the evidence that’s been gathered and cover up the truth about systemic racism the first chance he gets.
That’s why we’re calling on the Department of Justice to release as much information on current investigations as possible before Trump takes office. Will you sign the petition?
Below is the letter we'll send to Attorney General Loretta Lynch:
Dear Attorney General Lynch,
Thank you for your leadership in launching some of the most hard-hitting and important investigations into the systemic ills of the criminal justice system we've seen in decades. The findings uncovered in these investigations have led to real change in undoing the harmful impacts systemic racism has on Black people's lives.
That's why I'm writing to ask that you release findings from all current investigations before the next administration takes office. The stakes on current civil rights investigations--especially the investigations into Alton Sterling's death and Alabama prison conditions--are too high to leave to the hateful officials poised to take office.
It's tremendous that the Department worked hard to wrap up the Chicago PD investigation before Jan. 20. However, people are counting on the findings from the investigations your office doesn't get the chance to finish. Please release preliminary reports and status updates from any and all investigations that are not finished before the next administration takes office.
The incoming administration is scary to say the least. People are counting on you and your staff to do everything they can to lessen the impact as much as possible.
Thanks,
