We need Saturday mail delivery

House Republicans are jumping at the chance to put the U.S. Postal Service on the chopping block. A Bush-era requirement that the USPS pre-fund its retiree benefits 75 years into the future has pushed the agency to the verge of bankruptcy. Please urge Congress to enact postal reform that drops the unfair pre-funding burden, defends postal workers' jobs, and keeps the post office in service to all our communities.

Here’s the letter we’ll send to your Representative (you can add a personal comment using the box in the form):

Dear Member of Congress,

The U.S. Postal Service is obliged by the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) to pre-fund its retiree health benefits 75 years into the future within a 10-year period — a burden imposed on no other government agency or private employer. Predictably, the massive required annual payments have now pushed the USPS to the brink of bankruptcy.

The Postmaster General's plan to end Saturday mail delivery to cut costs would mean drastic workforce reductions when unemployment is still at 8% and Black unemployment has climbed to 14%. It makes no sense to slash good middle-class jobs for cuts around the edges that will further imperil the USPS's future while failing to address the root of the service's financial crisis.

With a decision on Saturday delivery imminent, I urge you to take this opportunity to enact real postal reform that ends the PAEA's unfair 75-year pre-funding burden — and expands the USPS's flexibility to generate additional revenue. The USPS's infrastructure is uniquely suited to meeting additional critical public needs, including by offering public Internet access, community banking, and expanded vote by mail.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
