Tell the Illinois House: Pass Automatic Voter Registration!
This week, the Illinois House will vote on HB4208 which would make Illinois the 5th state to pass Automatic Voter Registration. A vast majority of the voters who used Same Day Voter Registration in the Illinois primaries would have already been registered through AVR.
Automatic Voter Registration is much more than an innovative policy- it's a win for Civil Rights. With a great deal of confusion around registration deadlines, application errors, long lines at polling locations, and other structural failures, millions of eligible voters are not making their voices heard in our democratic process. These attempts to suppress the voices of people of color happen not only in the State of Illinois, but across the country. Passing Automatic Voter Registration would upgrade our system, clean up the rolls and eliminate error- not make it easier for ineligible people to vote as the State Board of Elections and others in opposition argue.
This bill has already passed through the Senate. We need to make sure it passes the House of Representatives with a veto-proof majority so Republican Governor Bruce Rauner thinks twice about trying to veto it.
