Tell Congress: Protect our freedom to vote. Pass the VRAA.

The recent ruling allowing North Carolina's monstrous voter suppression law to proceed shows us that after the Supreme Court's ruling in Shelby v. Holder the Voting Rights Act can no longer protect our freedom to vote.

In a 125-page decision, Judge Thomas Schroeder refused to acknowledge the discriminatory intent of a law penned by the far-right that bans same-day registration, slashes early voting, and ends the option to vote provisionally at another precinct even though Black North Carolinians were twice as likely to use all 3 of those convenient voting options.

Congress can repair the damage done by the Supreme Court by passing the Voting Right Amendment Act (VRAA). The VRAA is the best near-term option to fight back against right-wing voter suppression and stop attacks on our freedom to vote before the harm takes root. The bill has several key components:

    • Enhances the ability of voter to obtain a preliminary injunction — exactly the action requested in North Carolina — before potentially discriminatory bills are allowed to take affect.
    • Establishes a new coverage formula requiring pre-clearance of voting law changes in any state that has had a recent history of voter discrimination.
    • Strengthens the Section 3 “bail-in” provision making it easier to prove discrimination and add jurisdictions to the pre-clearance list.
    • Requires all 50 states provide 180-day notice of election law changes; preventing last-second changes intended to confuse and suppress voters.
    • Affirms the authority of the Attorney General to send election observers to jurisdictions with a history of discrimination against voters.

Join us in urging Congress to pass the Voting Right Amendment Act of 2014 to protect our freedom to vote:

    Tell Congress:

One year ago, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in the Shelby v. Holder decision demanding Congressional action to repair the historic bill. Since then you have done little and states across the country have rushed to enact discriminatory laws attacking our freedom to vote by restricting our options and making it harder for everyone to vote. The Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 (VRAA) would fight back against these anti-democratic laws and restore the Voting Rights Act. When you return from August recess, the top priority should be protecting our freedom to vote by passing the VRAA.
