Tell your Senators: The next President should decide who replaces Justice Ginsburg

Last night we lost trailblazing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. During her 27 years on the Court she repeatedly stood firm in her protection of many issues important to Black and Brown people including voting and workers’ rights, affirmative action, and women’s and LGBTQ equality. Ginsburg’s family says that her “most fervent wish was not to be replaced until a new president [is] installed.” Yet Mitch McConnell has already expressed his plans to bring Justice Ginsburg’s replacement to a vote on the Senate floor as soon as possible.
This is the same Mitch McConnell who said he felt no urgency to vote on a COVID relief package as hundreds of thousands of Americans died and millions more lost their jobs, businesses, and livelihoods — hardships that have disproportionately harmed Black and Brown people. Another Trump Justice would negatively impact these same hard-hit Black and Brown communities for decades, but there are signs Trump and McConnell may not have the votes they’re counting on.
With less than 50 days left until the November elections, the American people deserve to have a say in who chooses the next Supreme Court Justice. Millions of American have already requested their ballots and thousands across the country have already voted. This is a fight that we can win. Tell your Senator that they shouldn’t appoint a Supreme Court Justice until the inauguration of the next President.
