Congress: Save Pell Grants for college students

Congressional Republicans are trying to dramatically cut the Pell Grant program — a lifeline that makes college possible for more than 9 million low-income students and students of color each year.

Pell Grants are particularly important for Black students, as nearly half of Black undergraduates rely on Pell Grants to attend school. Please join us in calling on members of Congress to vote down any attempts to cut or restrict Pell Grant funding:

Below is the message we'll send to your Congressional representative:

Dear Representative,

I am calling on you to reject proposals to cut funding or restrict access to the Pell Grant program, a lifeline that makes college possible for more than 9 million low-income students and students of color each year. Pell Grants are particularly important for Black students, as nearly half of Black undergraduates rely on Pell Grants to attend school.

Any cuts will hit low-income students the hardest. Families with incomes below $40,000 constitute 90% of Pell awardees. Congress must work to expand opportunities for economic growth, not decimate higher-education programs that help future generations prepare to grow and stabilize our economy.

The nation is facing a fiscal crisis, with valuable social services and programs for youth and families the most threatened by impending budget cuts. Yet, cutting programs that help youth and families will not solve the budget shortfalls, but will certainly set our nation back in the long run. As you know, access to a good education dramatically increases a person's chances for solid employment and pay.

I'm calling on you to not throw Pell under the bus. If you do, you'll be robbing talented, deserving students of their educational futures. I ask you to show leadership and commit to voting against a budget that includes cuts to Pell Grants.

Sincerely,

[Your name here]
