Call Gov. Rick Snyder: Fire Michigan State Police Director

Michigan State Police Director Kriste Kibbey Etue should not spend one more day in her job. It's time for Governor Rick Snyder to stand up and fire her.

Last week, Etue abused her power and posted an awful Facebook post that referred to Black NFL players who protested against police brutality as "degenerates." As soon as news broke about the post, people started calling for Etue's resignation. She immediately apologized and said posting the comment was a "mistake." Even some Black troopers in her department were appalled by the Facebook post. Etue’s entire tenure as director for Michigan State Police is deeply entrenched in scandal and turmoil, she is not fit to serve.

An apology is not enough. Under Etue’s leadership, the Michigan State police department has a long and volatile history of misconduct and discrimination. Just this August, 15-year-old Black teenager Damon Grimes was tasered and killed by state trooper Mark Bessner. In a violation of policy, the officer fired the taser through a police vehicle window at him while pursuing the teen who then crashed his ATV. This same officer has a history of using excessive force, yet he remained on the job -- even with several lawsuits filed against him. Not once did director Etue hold him accountable, instead officer Bessner received the “Lifesaving Award” in 2016. Increasingly the department has received scrutiny and criticism for the lack of Black employees represented.

Etue was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in January 2011. Her words and practice have long been harmful to Michigan. it's time for her to go.
