President Obama: Stop the violent police tactics in #Ferguson

St. Louis and Ferguson police — dressed in camouflage and equipped with armored tanks and military rifles — fired tear gas, rubber coated bullets, and flash grenades at thousands of Black residents exercising their right to peacefully assemble and demand accountability for the police killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Many were injured in the war-like environment as police displayed blatant disregard for civil rights — unlawfully arresting dozens of people including members of the press.

Local authorities have proven incapable and the federal government must step in. Please join us in calling on President Barack Obama and US Attorney Eric Holder to deploy federal marshals to protect Missouri from an out of control and extremly violent police force.

Dear President Barack Obama and US Attorney General Eric Holder,

I was outraged when I heard about the tragic police killing of unarmed Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. And to make matters worse, police are blatantly disregarding civil rights and trampling on the constitutional right to peaceful protest. Police are out of control — unlawfully arresting dozens of people including members of the press.

We need immediate action from federal officials. You have the responsibility and the authority to protect the constitutional and civil rights of Ferguson residents who want to peacefully assemble. I urge to take immediate action to stop local officers from using excessive force and military tactics and equipment against peaceful protesters and journalists, before we see more tragic deaths of unarmed Black residents.

Your office must take definitive action to increase oversight and enforce a higher national standard that ends rampant police misconduct and protects the civil rights of Black residents of Ferguson and across the country.
