Why are companies still funding ALEC?

A trove of leaked documents created by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), recently published by The Guardian, shows that the organization is bleeding members and revenue.

91 funders have fled the organization, largely in response to ColorOfChange members' efforts to spotlight ALEC's responsibility for pushing discriminatory voter ID and deadly "Stand Your Ground" laws in states across the country.

ALEC is making a desperate scramble to woo back the companies who have left and recruit new prospects to fill the massive hole in its budget. Take action now to keep the pressure on and let corporations know they can't come for Black consumers' money by day and try to take away our rights and protections by night.

Here's the letter we'll send to the leadership of corporations that still support ALEC, on your behalf. You can add a personal comment using the box in the form.

Dear President/CEO,

To this day, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) refuses to acknowledge the damage it has done or to take any steps to ameliorate it.

It's thanks to ALEC that Florida's profit-driven “Stand Your Ground” law, directly authored by the NRA, today endangers millions of people living in 26 states across the country. It’s thanks to ALEC that Indiana’s selective voter ID law today subjects millions of eligible voters to unconstitutional poll taxes and disenfranchisement in 11 states across the country.

ALEC isn’t working to repeal any of these laws, anywhere in the country. It isn’t telling its member legislators to stop introducing new ones: at least ten “Stand Your Ground” bills have been introduced in 2013, and two have passed. This is in addition to at least 52 bills introduced to enact or tighten voter ID restrictions, of which five have passed.

ALEC was designed as an explicit pay-to-play legislation pipeline providing deep-pocketed corporations an end run around state-by-state lobbying efforts (and disclosure laws). It's structure ensures that extreme profit-driven legislation that exploits and endangers vulnerable communities will continue to be generated.

I urge you to immediately terminate all "membership," "sponsorship" and "scholarship" funding your company is currently providing to ALEC and commit to refrain from providing any funding in the future.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
