It's been nearly one year since Cleveland police brutally killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice as he played in the park, and not one officer has been held accountable. It's despicable.
Despite more than enough evidence to file criminal charges, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty hasn't even presented the case to a grand jury. In June, an Ohio judge ruled that Officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback should face murder charges for Tamir's killing, yet McGinty has chosen to disregard the ruling. Instead, he is going out of his way to defend the police, recently releasing two reports by discredited pro-police "experts" saying that Tamir's killing was "justified.
With enough public outrage, we can stop this cover-up in its tracks. Join Tamir Rice's mother — Samaria Rice — in demanding a special prosecutor take over the prosecution of her son's killing.
This is the letter we'll send to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty on your behalf. Feel free to add a personal comment in the space provided.
Dear Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty,
I demand you request a special prosecutor to prosecute the tragic police killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. For a number of reasons, the public has lost faith in your ability to ethically oversee this case.
There is more than enough evidence to criminally prosecute Cleveland Police Officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback, yet one year after Tamir's tragic killing you have not filed any criminal charges against either officer.
Tamir Rice posed no threat to law enforcement, but was brutally killed within seconds of Officer Loehmann and Frank Garmback arriving at the park where Tamir was playing. As he lay dying, neither officer gave Tamir CPR or first aid. This type of inhumane and discriminatory police violence has no place in Ohio.
I urge you to do what is necessary to secure justice for Tamir; appoint a special prosecutor immediately.
Thank you,
