Help level the playing field for qualified Black Californians to compete for employment opportunities.

Join us in urging Governor Jerry Brown to "Ban the Box" on job application forms that encourages government employers to illegally discriminate and shut formerly incarcerated applicants out of gainful employment.

Here's the letter we'll send to the governor on your behalf urging him to "Ban the Box." (You can add a personal comment using the box in the form.)

Dear Gov. Jerry Brown,

I am writing to urge you to sign AB 218, "Ban the Box" legislation that would make it harder for public sector employers to discriminate against formerly incarcerated job seekers. "Ban the Box" is already on the books in nine other states.

The bill would remove the deeply prejudicial checkbox disclosure of prior convictions from government job applications — while still permitting a criminal background check for qualified applicants later in the hiring process. These reforms are critical to reducing the Black unemployment rate, strengthening our economy, and meeting the state's goal of significantly reducing recidivism and prison overcrowding over the long term.

All Californians will benefit when people with past convictions are no longer shut out of jobs, and can financially support their families and contribute to the economy. I urge you to "Ban the Box" today and remove unfair barriers to reentry.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
