Demand disciplinary action for the officer who arrested an activist for distributing voting rights literature
This Monday, while attending the Moral Mondays Labor Day action in Charlotte’s Marshall Park, local LGBT activist and former State Senate candidate Ty Turner was arrested for placing information about North Carolina’s early voting options on parked cars. In an outrageous violation of standard police procedure, the police demanded Turner not film the interaction, handcuffed him, refused to inform him of what law he broke and transported him to two alternate locations before actually bringing him to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
Join us in demanding the officer involved is disciplined for his unacceptable conduct.
Here's the letter we'll send on your behalf. You can add a personal comment using the box provided.
Dear CMPD Police Chief Rodney Monroe, Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter, members of the City Council and City Manager Ron Carlee,
Officer David Tropeano should be disciplined for his arrest of Ty Turner on Labor Day. His actions violated the standards of conduct that police officers should uphold. It is unacceptable for an officer to refuse to show which ordinance for which he is writing a citation, to demand a citizen not film an interaction with the police and then to transport Mr Turner to two locations before bringing him to the Mecklenburg County Jail. Officer Tropeano's actions represent a virulent form of racially-biased policing that has no place in our communities.
In addition to disciplining Officer Tropeano, there needs to be a thorough review of CMPD procedures to ensure that interactions like this do not occur in the future.
Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
