Florida Gov. Scott and Secretary Daly: End for-profit youth prisons
Corrupt for-profit companies have taken over Florida's criminal justice system — making millions by unjustly incarcerating Black and Brown youth in violently exploitative and inhumane conditions.
We can stop this abusive system. Tell the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice: stop contracting with abusive for-profit prisons.
UPDATE: Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary Wansley Walters has retired. The new interim FLDJJ secretary is Christina Daly. We are now focusing our our efforts on Interim Secretary Daly and Governor Scott.

Dear Gov. Scott and Sec. Daly,
I am writing to ask you to reconsider your stake in the private prison industry. Private youth prisons are working against the best interest of your department and public safety. For-profit prisons are worsening our nation's prison problem — disincentivizing youth rehabilitation in the name of corporate profits.
All juvenile residential facilities in the state of Florida are run by private companies. In light of recent information exposing the danger of these prisons in Florida, we urge you to cancel and not renew any contracts with private prison companies, particularly the three contracts valued at almost $120 million that expire at the end of this month. These companies disregard the safety and health of Floridian youth in exchange for profits. And profiting from locking up our young people is unacceptable.
Although Florida has increasingly contracted with private prisons, other states around the country are moving in the opposite direction. Understaffing, sexual abuse, and lawsuits are just a few of the reasons states like Kentucky, Texas, Idaho, New Hampshire, and Mississippi are cutting ties with this shameful industry. I urge you to immediately stop supporting private prisons and refocus your priorities on a more humane alternative.
