Missouri Can Prevent Another Trayvon: Stop "Stand Your Ground"
A GOP-led legislature wants to bring Stand Your Ground to yet another state. This is the same law that let George Zimmerman kill 17 year old Trayvon Martin and get away with it-- we have to stop this!
Recently the Governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon, vetoed the gun expansion bill that would have made Stand Your Ground law, now the legislature wants to override that decision. In addition to a litany of other horrendous gun expansion provisions, this proposed bill has an extremely gross “Stand Your Ground” component. It’s known that “Stand Your Ground” is a “kill at will shoot first” law that disproportionately justifies the killing of Black folks by white people.
SB 656 seeks to allow gun owners, without permits or training, the right to carry hidden weapons any and everywhere they are allowed to openly carry them. Over 75 percent of people in Missouri disagree with legalizing concealed weapons in public. Their law makers are clearly working for themselves!
This bill is dangerous and ineffective. And according to statistics, it will not reduce crime. It will more than likely increase the number of people who feel empowered to kill Black folks. With cases like Marissa Alexander, Trayvon Martin, and Jordan, we know who’s usually on the other end of the barrel in “Stand Your Ground’ states.
Below is the letter we'll send to the Missouri General Assembly on your behalf.
Dear Missouri State Senators,
I urge you to stand with your constituents and do not override Gov. Jay Nixon's veto of SB 656, the proposed “Stand Your Ground” law.
This bill is a direct attack on Black communities. Studies show that whites who kill Black folks are 356 times more likely to be justified than if they killed another white person. In fact in Florida, after passing “SYG”, the homicide rate tripled. That is not the kind of future that 76% of Missouri residents want, deserve, or will vote for.
You have the power to stop this shoot first “Stand Your Ground” bill from becoming law.
Thank you,
