Voting While Black

Report False or Misleading Information

From Jim Crow laws to voter purges, people in power have stopped at nothing to discourage Black people from casting their votes.

In the digital age, fake news stories and memes are spreading quickly in our social media communities and our messaging apps. You see them all the time: the theory that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya, rather than in Hawaii, suggesting he was disqualified from his candidacy or that he was related to Osama Bin Laden or that Black people are immune to COVID-19.

These are just a few examples of attempts used to promote fear and confusion, designed to persuade the thoughts of our friends and family members. We need your help in collecting these different types of content.

Please share articles, graphics, advertisements, and even gossip that you come across online or offline that seem suspicious. Together, we can fight back and hold those accountable who are trying to keep us from voting.

Guidance on filling out the form:

First, please provide a link to the problematic content you found if available. This can be a link to a social media post (a Facebook post, a YouTube video, or a tweet), a link to a news site or a direct link to a website that contains the problem you’re addressing.

Next, describe the issue you saw or heard. Questions to ask yourself: What is inaccurate or misleading about what you saw? Why is what you saw harmful to Black voters? Where were you when you saw it?

And then let us know the date you saw the suspicious content and how you came across it.

Lastly, please let us know if you identify as Black. Submissions from all of our members is appreciated, this just helps us track specific messaging and tactics directed at Black audiences.

Soon we’ll have a place for you to upload photos or screenshots of what you saw.
