Black Tech Town Hall: AI, Algorithms, And The Costs To Our Future

Nationwide, Black and Brown people are being priced out of the long-standing communities and neighborhoods. What was once a cultural epicenter is being actively whitewashed, erasing any legacies that have been built over generations. Artificial intelligence is on the new frontier of gentrification and housing discrimination.

Corporations like RealPage, ResMan, TurboTenant, and others are artificially inflating the rental and housing markets. This means prices are being driven up, and rental/housing availability is becoming artificially scarce, impacting Black communities the most. Black communities overwhelmingly rent with 58% of households being rented. Our neighborhoods are being targeted, and we are being priced out, leading to gentrification, displacement, and ever-growing housing insecurity.

As AI takes control of more of our lives, it imposes a pervasive new cost on our communities. This cost isn’t just digital; it’s a financial, environmental, and social extraction of wealth, worsening inequality under the guise of innovation.
