Ever wondered why you are paying a private corporation to receive your own tax refund?
Tax season kicks off Friday, Jan. 29, and the IRS is rolling out its own software allowing taxpayers in 12 states to file their taxes directly with the IRS for free.
Ever wondered why you are paying a private corporation to receive your own refund? Simply put, the tax preparation industry is deceitful. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently prohibited Intuit’s TurboTax from advertising “free” services, calling it a deceptive practice. A staggering 70% of taxpayers qualify to file their taxes for free, and yet nearly no one does. Millions of individuals frustratingly surrender their hard-earned money to companies like H&R Block and Intuit — to the tune of $13 billion annually —- being duped in the process, just to claim what is rightfully theirs.

It’s not just online tax providers who have stolen our money. Brick and mortar tax preparation services strategically place their offices in low-income and Black and Brown communities, exploiting the vulnerability of the people who rely on their refunds the most.
Here's another crucial point: Most paid tax preparers are unqualified to assist you with your returns. The federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) estimates that 60% of returns submitted by paid preparers contain errors. IRS records show that more than 112,000 people have reported fraud or misconduct by their tax preparers during the last decade.
