Twitter: Recruit a more diverse hiring pool - including Black men and women

More than a year ago, after releasing disappointing numbers on the diversity of its workforce, Twitter made a promise to step up its diversity efforts. The company is expected to release an update to the those numbers soon, and it’s important for them to take this round seriously. Instead of just releasing data on the number of Black people who work at Twitter, the company should include a plan for how to move the needle past the current two percent of Black workers, like a talent pool of Black applicants that it can draw from to fill open positions.

Having a diverse workforce is more than just good public relations for Twitter. More Black people between the ages of 18 and 29 use Twitter than any other comparable group, and the site has the potential to negatively impact Black communities. For example, information shared on Twitter by Black users can be misused to discriminate or surveil individuals who organize in Black communities or use pro-Black speech. Having Black input at every level of decision-making is the only way Twitter can make sure that it's not harming its strongest user base.

Tell Twitter: We want more than just diversity numbers--create a pool of Black job applicants now.

Twitter needs a hiring pool of that includes a diversity of candidates. Tell them to recruit more Black women and men.
