The bail bonds industry is legally allowed to prey on low-income Black people who are disproportionately impacted by every aspect of the criminal justice system. As the industry is making billions from this practice, it is financially crippling the families they exploit. Last year alone, Maryland’s largest bail insurer, Lexington National Insurance Company collected over $120 million in premiums from families of people locked up.

Now, this same industry is attempting to manipulate Maryland legislators with money to block bail reform policies that will help keep Black families together and lower mass incarceration rates. Maryland House Delegate Joseph Vallario and State Senator Bobby Zirkin both chair judiciary committees within the legislature and can end the bail industries Monopoly games, but they are the two largest beneficiaries of money from the industry.

In the past, both Vallario and Zirkin have not been proponents of bail reform and have blocked it several times. We have to remind them that they work for the people of Maryland, not the bail industry.

Join us and Maryland activist to demand House Delegate Joseph Vallario and State Senator Bobby Zirkin to end the bail industries ability to profiteer off of the separation and exploitation Black families.

Dear Maryland House Del. Joseph Vallario and State Senator Bobby Zirkin:

We know you both have been receiving extremely large financial contributions from the Maryland bail industry. As a member of the general assembly, your role is to always represent the people of this state -- NOT bail corporations!

I stand with Maryland constituents to demand that you support Maryland Pretrial Act 2017 so it can be called for a vote during this legislative cycle.

    Thank you,
