Tell Your Alderperson: Co-Sponsor the Community Power Over Policing Ordinance

Below is the letter we'll send to your Alderperson:

    Dear Alderperson,

As your constituent, I request that you co-sponsor the recently introduced Ordinance 02024-0009670: Community Power Over Policing Referendum to Strengthen the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability. This ordinance calls for a referendum allowing Chicago voters to decide whether to expand the powers of the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA) and increase the democratic representation of the CCPSA. Voters would decide whether to expand the CCPSA from a seven-member appointed body to an 11-member body that includes nine elected commissioners and two appointed commissioners.

The referendum would ask voters to decide whether to expand the CCPSA’s powers to include a voice in negotiating the Chicago Police Department’s budget and union contract, as well as power to hire and fire the police superintendent and members of the police board and to set policies.

Chicago voters should have the opportunity to vote on whether to expand the CCPSA in this way. Please co-sponsor and support the swift advancement of this ordinance giving Chicagoans the power to decide.

    Thank you,

    [constituent name]
