Tell the FCC to restore the phone justice rule NOW!
For years, Color Of Change and our members fought to make phone calls more affordable for incarcerated people and their families. Together, we won that fight. The Martha Wright-Reed Act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, finally bringing relief to families burdened by the outrageous costs of simply staying connected.
Now, that hard-won victory is under attack.
Donald Trump's FCC Chairman, Brendan Carr, who is moving to roll back these very reforms—a move that could make calls for incarcerated people and their families up to 83% more expensive.
Carr is ignoring the law, delaying protections for two more years, and siding with the prison telecom industry that makes $1.4 billion a year in profits from vulnerable families. While they line their pockets, families—especially Black families and mothers, will once again carry the heaviest burden.
These calls are lifelines. They keep families and loved ones connected, reduce recidivism, and make our communities safer. Brendan Carr’s actions would rip that lifeline away.
Here is the Petition:
I join Color Of Change in demanding that the FCC restore the phone justice reforms established by the Martha Wright-Reed Act!
Connecting families helps people thrive, and incarcerated individuals should be able to speak with their loved ones without causing financial hardships. Phone and video calls are the easiest way families can stay in touch with incarcerated loved ones. But prison telecom corporations charge families as much as $1 a minute for a phone call.
It’s unconscionable that one in three families go into debt just to talk with their loved ones behind bars. Most families in that situation already face financial hardships, and having to pay substantially for phone calls can make a bad situation even worse.
The ruthlessness of prison telecom corporations cannot continue. We demand that the FCC enforce the Martha Wright-Reed Act to stop telecom companies from taking advantage of incarcerated people and their families and charging outlandish rates for voice and video calls!
