Suspend AI in the Rental and Housing Markets!

    Here is the Petition:

Nationwide Black and Brown people are being priced out of the long-standing communities and neighborhoods. What was once a cultural epicenter is being actively white-washed, erasing any legacies that have been built over generations. Artificial intelligence is on the new frontier of gentrification and housing discrimination.

Corporations like RealPage, ResMan, TurboTenant and others are artificially inflating the rental and housing markets. This means prices are being driven up, and rental/housing availability is becoming artificially scarce, impacting Black communities the most. Black communities overwhelmingly rent with 58% of households being rented. Our neighborhoods are being targeted, and we are being priced out leading to gentrification, displacement, and ever growing housing insecurity.

We cannot allow algorithms to take over our neighborhoods!

    Our Demands

Suspension of AI In the Rental /Housing Market

    • An immediate suspension of all applications, algorithms, or technologies that artificially inflate the housing and/or rental market, or represent false housing/rental estimates and quotes.
      • Artificial inflation is characterized by increased or decreased demand, as reflected in listings on rental/housing websites or rental portals.
    • False housing/rental estimates and quotes are characterized by price estimates that do not reflect the true market value of said housing or rental space.

    Racial Equity Audits

    • Regular and mandatory independent racial equity audits into housing discrimination and algorithmic bias based on protected class.

    Transparency & Accountability

    • Commission an independent investigation into the current implications of algorithms, applications, and other technologies on rental/housing practices, including housing/rental contracts/agreements, and estimated prices by protected class, and housed/renter demographics.
    • All findings must be published and accessible to the general public.
