Below is the letter we’ll be sending to Andrew Tisch, Benjamin Winter, Robert Tucker, and the rest of the NYC Police Foundation Board:
Demand NYC Police Foundation disclose their contributions to the NYPD!
We have no clue how large the NYPD’s budget really is…
The NYC Police Department (NYPD) has a massive annual budget, gobbling up $11 BILLION in 2020 alone. Yet the New York City Police Foundation — a private, corporate-funded organization — has continued to funnel cash to the NYPD and the harm they cause Black communities. And we don't know how much money the police foundation has handed over to the overfunded, militarized NYPD.
ADD YOUR NAME: Demand that the New York City Police Foundation release ALL information regarding their financial contributions to the NYPD.
During the 2020 New York City budget negotiations, the NYPD committed to disclosing how much the police department receives in private, off-book contributions. Almost a year later, we still have no idea how much money large donors like the New York City Police Foundation are secretly giving the NYPD (not to mention donations of weapons, software, and police equipment).
Instead of supporting public safety initiatives that actually keep communities safe, the NYC Police Foundation — backed with millions of dollars from wealthy private donors and corporations like Citibank, Target, Bank of America, even the NY Giants — has explicitly embraced its role of expanding policing in ways that harm Black communities and remove public oversight.
Let’s be clear: With an $11 billion budget and an arsenal of chemical weapons, tanks, sniper units, surveillance towers, and sound grenades, NYPD is one of the largest military forces on earth. NYPD has As Black New Yorkers demand public safety, not policing, the New York City Police Foundation is funneling more money to an unaccountable, bloated, and deadly police department.
That's why we're calling on the New York City Police Foundation’s board members to immediately release ALL information regarding their contributions to the NYPD. Add your name to demand disclosure now.
Here is the Petition:
Dear New York City Police Foundation Board of Advisors,
We are calling on you to immediately release and make public all information regarding your foundation’s contributions to the NYPD. During the 2020 City Council budget negotiations, the NYPD said that their financial donors have the responsibility to make public their contributions to the NYPD. However, almost a year later, the New York City Police Foundation has yet to make any of this information public and continues to serve as a private backchannel funneling money to an already over-funded and over-militarized police department.
New Yorkers deserve transparency and have the right to know how large the NYPD’s budget truly is.
I urge you to immediately release, and make public, all information regarding any forms of contributions the New York City Police Foundation has made to the NYPD!“
