Mitch McConnell, the self-proclaimed “Darth Vader” and “Grim Reaper” of American politics, has grown his power and influence by systemically stripping Black people of political and economic power. And now we know he comes by it honestly - the heir to privilege and financial wealth built by his slave owning ancestors, he is the poster child for why we need reparations in this country.

While Mitch McConnell whistles dixie and pals around white nationalists and Big Pharma billionaires, doing photo shoots in front of confederate flags, McConnell’s current net worth has grown to $27 million, 1,000 times the median income of Black people in his home state of Kentucky. And yet to let him tell it, he’s a good ole common boy, whose empire sprung up from the fruits of his hard work and labor. More like his family for many generations has benefitted from the dark legacy of slavery and today as a decision maker he does every everything in his power to make sure that power remains concentrated at the highest levels, with Black people remaining at the bottom of a carefully crafted economic, social and political apartheid system.

Make no mistake - if anyone needs to pay up, it’s money bags McConnell.

Reparations - the act of making amends for a wrong that has been done - has long been acknowledged as a necessary act in order to make financially whole those who have been victims of slavery and systemic oppression. While Black folks have never been given an economic foothold to recover from 400 years of slavery, people like Mitch McConnell have reaped countless benefits.

Mitch “all lives matters” McConnell has delivered with cruel cynicism a brand of politics rooted in putting profits, ego and personal power over the health and wellbeing of the country he claims to love. If Mitch McConnell loves this country as much as he proclaims, he has a patriotic duty to make right past and present wrongs. One place to start would be reparations. Tell Mitch McConnell he is responsible for the reparations his family owes!

Senator McConnell,

I am writing to you on behalf of the 14 Black women and men your great-grandfathers enslaved. In your recent statements on reparations for the descendants of slavery, you stated that "none of us currently living are responsible" for what you called "our original sin". Although slave holders like your grandfathers are not currently alive, the impacts of their actions are very much alive. And you are an heir to the wealth your family acquired through enslaving Black people. 

As a self-proclaimed "patriot", it is your duty to make right past and present wrongs. You are responsible for the reparations your family owes.
