Below is the letter we will send to Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine:
Justice For Casey!
We stand in solidarity with the family of Casey Goodson, Jr. and the Black community of Columbus as they fight for justice after his death at the hands of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.
We don’t need video footage to believe the eye witness account of Sharon Payne, Casey’s 72-year-old grandmother, who says he was shot in the back after returning home from a dentist appointment.
Here's what we know: 23-year-old Casey Goodson, Jr. was murdered by police inside of his Ohio home on December 4, 2020. He had just walked through the front door after returning from a dentist appointment when Franklin County sheriff’s deputy Jason Meade shot him in the back three times.
Casey Goodson, Jr. was someone’s son. He was a big brother, animal enthusiast, entrepreneur, and beloved member of his community. He had his entire life ahead of him. Yet he was executed by Deputy Jason Meade in front of his grandmother, his 5-year-old brother, and his 3-year-old cousin.
Add your name: Demand justice for Casey Goodson, Jr. now.
Casey’s murderer, Deputy Jason Meade, had just finished an unsuccessful search for “violent suspects” in the area when the shooting took place. Casey was not a possible suspect, nor was he wanted by law enforcement prior to his murder. He was not involved in the search in any way, shape, or form. The fact is, Casey Goodson was killed in cold blood — and an autopsy ruled his death a homicide. In spite of this evidence, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office attempted to manufacture a false narrative to justify Jason Meade's violence, claiming that Casey brandished a weapon. Although Casey did have a concealed carry permit, witnesses say he wasn’t holding a gun at the time of the shooting. He was holding Subway sandwiches for his family.
Casey Goodson, Jr. and his family deserve justice — and we need you to stand with us to demand it.
If police officers are protected by biased media coverage, corrupt police unions, internal investigations, and paid administrative leave, they will continue to murder Black people with impunity.
We're demanding justice from Mayor Andrew Ginther and Governor Mike DeWine:
- Fire Deputy Jason Meade for the murder of Casey Goodson
Now is the time to effectively strategize, organize, and move powerfully toward our vision of deep systemic change.
