    Justice For Jayland Walker

On Monday, April 17, a special grand jury in Ohio declined to indict the Akron police officers who shot Jayland Walker dozens of times in June 2022.

After 10 months of public outcry, protests and demands of accountability from Jayland’s loved ones and the community, the grand jury decided that the officers were legally justified in their use of force.

Our hearts break for Jayland’s family and the Akron community. Jayland was a young man with a family and a bright future, a human who deserved to be treated with dignity. Instead, eight Akron police officers shot him more than 40 times after a car chase and foot pursuit.

Every step of the way, Akron’s elected officials have marginalized the needs of our communities. They’ve taken no real steps toward implementing policies that would keep our people safe from deadly police encounters.

But we’re not giving up. We’re calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to intervene. They have the power to implement real change.

     Here is the demand:

    • Launch a pattern or practice investigation into the Akron Police Department.

Here’s the petition we’ll send to the Department of Justice:

Here’s the petition we’ll send to the Department of Justice:

The police killing of Jayland Walker and the ongoing persecution of his neighbors prove that too many cops regard Black people as inherently dangerous, which serves as tacit permission to treat them without humanity. The Akron Police Department has abused and weaponized its authority by terrorizing, murdering and violating the civil rights of Black people. That’s why I’m standing in solidarity with Color Of Change, The Freedom BLOC, Jayland’s family and the Akron community to demand justice, accountability and safety.

We are calling on you to take immediate action:

    • Launch a pattern or practice investigation into the Akron Police Department.

The violent, police-only response to the community outcry in Akron has proven to be dangerous to Black people, who already are impacted by this trauma and targeted by the Akron Police Department.

Akron deserves safety and Jayland Walker’s family deserves justice and accountability. We are calling on you to ensure a transparent public investigation and real policy action to prevent the police murder of Black people in Akron.

    Sincerely,
