    Justice for Harith Augustus

Chicago police prove once again they have no regard for Black people's lives. On Saturday evening, Harith "Snoop the Barber" Augustus, a young Black man, and father to a 5-year old daughter was shot multiple times in the back by police. Soon after, dozens of community members and activists poured into the streets to protest their outrage against the Chicago Police department's frequent abuse of power. This led to police attacking and hitting protesters with batons. Ultimately it resulted in four people arrested -- including one charged with a misdemeanor and three others being detained and released.

Like clockwork, the police is doing all it can to cover for itself. Only an edited footage of the police body camera video has been released publically. The video freezes for about two seconds to show Harith with a weapon strapped to his body. The police already have an excuse that Harith "exhibited characteristics of an armed person"  To make matters worse, the officer who shot Harith just completed field training but was still considered probationary and has only been on the force for less than two years, graduating from the police academy just over a year ago. This is the same police department that has a dangerous and violent history of killing Black people in Chicago without any accountability.

Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx represents Chicago. Foxx's leadership is supposed to signal a change and a push for transparency and accountability with law enforcement. This is not the time for any silence from elected officials. It was a homicide. Kim Foxx has the authority to bring charges against the officers involved in the shooting. Foxx also must drop the charges against one protestor Melvin Johnson who had every right to take to the streets to demand justice for Harith.

Here are the 3 critical demands:

    • Release all video footage of the interaction between police and Harith
    • Drop all charges against Melvin Johnson who participated in the protest against Harith's killing
    • Hold all officers involved accountable.

A family and a community are in mourning. Demand Kim Foxx to the right thing. Demand justice for Harith Augustus.

Below is the letter we will send Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx:

    Here is the Petition:

    Dear Kim Foxx,

We urge you to stay true to your promise as State Attorney and hold the entire Chicago Police Department accountable including all the officers involved in killing Harith Augustus. The people of Chicago do not deserve to live in fear as the police kill and brutalizes the community. The family of Harith Augustus deserves answers and justice.
