    #FreeDontaeSharpe

Dontae Sharpe has been incarcerated since the age of 19. He has now spent 22 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Dontae has spent decades behind bars despite a complete lack of evidence against him, recanted witness testimony and mounting evidence of misconduct by police and prosecutors in Greenville, NC.

Dontae was convicted of a murder connected to a drug buy in 1994 but the case quickly fell apart. The prosecution's key witness recanted her testimony within two months of the trial and a detective from the case has come forward to admit that Dontae was wrongfully convicted and that evidence in the case was selectively documented to build the case against him.

Dontae has spent over half of his life behind bars because he maintains his innocence. If he'd confessed to the crime he was convicted of he would be home today. His case is a tragic example of the deep-rooted moral corruption of our criminal justice system where prosecutors and police can exploit racism and inequality to try and extract guilt from innocent people.

Join Color Of Change and the NC NAACP in calling on North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein and Pitt County District Attorney Kimberly Robb to #FreeDontaeSharpe. We can’t wait another decade for justice to be served.

This letter will go to North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein and Pitt County District Attorney Kimberly Robb on your behalf.

Dear Governor Cooper, Attorney General Stein and District Attorney Robb,

On behalf of the NC NAACP, Color Of Change, and our members we come to you seeking to do justice in the case of Dontae Sharpe, a well-loved Greenville native who has spent over half his life imprisoned unjustly. This injustice must end and it must end today. We believe that you are committed to upholding your ethical and constitutional responsibility to seek justice not just convict.

Dontae has spent 22 years, over half his life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. The state of North Carolina took 19-year-old Dontae Sharpe’s innocence, freedom, and life 22 years ago. We call on you now to finally serve justice by overturning this wrongful conviction.

To ignore this injustice is to turn a blind eye to unearned imprisonment at the hands of and in the name of the state of North Carolina. As our elected leaders, we ask that you set right the  injustice that was done to Mr. Sharpe.

We look forward to discussing this case further and gaining your support in this fight for justice. We are ready to celebrate together when these wrongs are made right and North Carolina may be seen as a model of integrity in our Justice system.

    Sincerely,

    [Your Name]
