Facebook is helping Trump steal the election, and they’re doing it through their conservative Vice President of Global Public Policy, Joel Kaplan. From a chaotic ad ban that disproportionately hurt Democratic candidates and progressive causes, to inflating Brietbart's reach in the week before the election, Kaplan is to blame for policies that directly benefit Trump. 

If this behavior wasn’t bad enough, Facebook is now allowing their platform to amplify Trump’s false claims of victory. But this is no surprise to us; everything at Facebook is run through Joel Kaplan, and we know by now that if it’s policy that benefits Trump, Facebook will enact it. 

With Kaplan at the helm of Facebook’s policy team, we cannot trust the platform to ensure harmful misinformation surrounding the election is moderated. At Color Of Change, we’ve spent more than five years pushing Facebook to create effective policies to prevent exactly these issues. But this election is far too important to wait around for Facebook to do the right thing. 

As long as Joel Kaplan is in leadership at Facebook, we know that the platform will continue to allow conservative and right-wing misinformation to spread like wildfire and steal the election. 

It’s time for Joel Kaplan to go. Tell Facebook to fire Kaplan, once and for all.

Mr. Zuckerberg: 

After years and years of your Color Of Change, civil rights groups, and Black users on your platform demanding clear policies to remove hate groups and misinformation from the platform, you still won't do it. You previously promised that you would eradicate hate from the platform, but Black users are still having their posts taken down while white nationalist groups and posts that incite violence remain. You've supposedly created policies to moderate misinformation during the election, but incorrect information is still being spread on the platform.  

We are tired of your empty promises. We know that as long as Joel Kaplan is working at Facebook, the platform will never meaningfully address content moderation. We demand that you immediately fire Joel Kaplan and apologize to your users and staff members who are being directly harmed by the misinformation, hate, and violence that spreads through the platform.
