By signing, you will send this letter to Florida Gov. Rick Scott and the Secretary of State Ken Detzner:
Tell Florida Governor & Secretary of State to Extend Voter Registration Deadline.
There must be an voter registration deadline extension for eligible Florida residents. Join thousands of Floridians to demand Gov. Rick Scott and Secretary of State Ken Detzner to use their authority to extend the voter registration deadline.
We've seen this happen before in Florida: "technical issues" is the new face of voter suppression. Florida has an ugly history of voter suppression against Black and Brown voters. And, this is the worst kind of deja vu. Extending the voter registration deadline is not only an important act of good faith that rebuilds public trust in our democracy, but fundamentally upholds the integrity of Florida democratic electoral process and its outcomes. We must defend the Black vote and our hard-earned democratic rights.
We are concerned about the impact on eligible Florida voters regarding:
1) Failures of Florida's online voter registration website that were just fixed hours ago before voter registration ends this Tuesday, Oct. 9th and,
2) Gov. Rick Scott's state of emergency warning for pending Hurricane Michael which effectively encouraged many eligible Florida residents to stay at home to protect their homes in preparation for the storm
Join us in ensuring that every eligible Florida resident is able to fairly exercise their basic democratic right to vote.
Black Votes Matter, and we need you to join us to defend the Black Vote.
Here is the Petition:
Dear Florida Gov. Rick Scott and the Secretary of State Ken Detzner:
I'm asking you to extend the Florida voter registration deadline.
All the way up to yesterday, potentially thousands of Florida residents trying to use the state's online voter reg website were unable to register -- effectively barring them from exercising their democratic right to vote. Additionally, Gov. Scott you have recently declared a state of emergency for Hurricane Michael. This leaves many individuals, who heeded your safety warning, stranded from registering especially since the option to register remotely online was also blocked off to them.
Because the website failures were addressed just as of today mere hours before the voter registration deadline closes, there must be an extension for eligible Florida residents who were impacted and may be effectively barred from their democratic right to vote.
Florida has an ugly history of voter suppression against Black and Brown voters. Your act to extend the voter registration deadline is not only an important act of good faith that rebuilds public trust in our democracy, but fundamentally upholds the integrity of Florida democratic electoral process and its outcomes.
Thank you. We hope you extend the Florida Voter Registration Deadline.
