Mark Zuckerberg must fix the murky guidelines that allow politicians to spread of misinformation, outright lies, and hate speech on Facebook’s platforms. Color Of Change met with him less than two weeks ago, and Zuckerberg still refuses to institute civil rights guidelines that will protect Black people from harm and prevent the destruction of our democracy. Most recently, Zuckerberg allowed lies to spread on Facebook about the upcoming election, which convinced millions of people that mail-in ballots will result in voter fraud.

Such falsehoods spread like wildfire and lead to voter suppression, all as a result of the accommodations that Zuckerberg provides for right-wing politicians that exclude them from following Facebook’s rules. But in 2020, when COVID-19 cases keep increasing, and with one of the most important elections of our time looming ahead, we cannot afford to allow false information to spread. 

Tell Facebook to special rules for politicians.

Our requests to you have been simple. We've asked you to invest in a civil rights infrastructure, start prioritizing the safety of Black users, and prioritize the sanctity of our democracy. Still, you allow right-wing politicians to evade Facebook's policies, and spread lies, misinformation, and hate that has the potential to compromise the upcoming election.  

No longer will we allow these policies, which exempt politicians’s lies from content moderation, to infect Facebook with injustice and inequality. We demand that you end special rules from politicians, and stop providing immunity for politicians who use the platform to spread false information.
