Demand Chicago Mayor Rahm Stand Up Racist Police Department

The Department of Justice report released today confirms what Black communities in Chicago have known for a long time: racism is alive and  kicking in the Chicago Police Department.

The 13 month long investigation that was sparked after the killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Black folks organized locally and nationally to expose the systemic and unconstitutional practices of the Chicago Police Department and this DOJ report shows we can’t fight this alone.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel needs to join this fight—it’s time for him to completely overhaul his compromised police department. As a first step, the Mayor must honor his commitment to negotiating a consent decree with the DOJ and meaningfully engaging Chicago’s Black communities in the development of reforms. Mayor Emanuel must also stand up to Chicago’s police union during contract negotiations this year and strike measures that stifle public accountability and shield abusive officers from investigation.

The Mayor has a choice: he can take action to reign in his police department, or he can continue enabling unconstitutional racism and police brutality.

Join us in demanding he hold the Chicago Police Department accountable.

Below is the letter we'll send to Mayor Rahm Emanuel:

    Dear Mayor Rahm Emnauel,

After months of investigation the Department of Justice released the findings of the Chicago Police Department. What was found was of no surprise to your Black and Brown constituents or the millions of people who've witnessed and experienced police violence and brutality. The DOJ report not only shows how systematically racist your Police Department is, but it's practices have been deemed unconstitutional.

You now have a responsibility to stand up to law enforcement by not making it harder to investigate and hold them accountable. Do not allow police unions to continue to perpetuate these harmful practices. Take into serious consideration the concerns and lives of Black and Brown Chicagoans while navigating these union contract meetings. Demand these police unions work for the most vulnerable people in Chicago, people of color, and not continue a racist agenda that brutalizes and exploits them.

We are asking "Which side are you on?". Be on the side of justice and righteousness. Defend your most impacted residence by standing up to police unions.

    Thank you,
