Demand a Transparent Appointment Process for the Alameda DA’s Seat

On Monday, Nov. 18, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price officially conceded following the outcome of the recall election to remove her from office. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors soon will begin the search for an Interim DA to serve until a successor is elected in 2026.

It’s critical that the next Alameda County DA prioritizes solutions that address the root causes of crime, rather than falling back on the failed tools of incarceration and over-policing.

By demanding an open and transparent appointment process, we ensure our voices are heard in selecting a DA committed to these crucial reforms. Join COC in calling for the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to engage in an open and transparent process to select an interim DA.

Here is the Petition:

Alameda County Board of Supervisors,

As an Alameda County resident, I am writing to urge you to conduct an open and transparent selection process to appoint an interim district attorney for Alameda County. Previously, other counties in California, including Contra Costa County in 2017, have conducted open DA recruitment, application and appointment processes, including holding community forums, providing multiple opportunities for public and online comments, and publicly interviewing each of the finalists. We encourage you to take similar action to ensure the appointment is transparent and includes public input.

Our county deserves a district attorney who is aligned with Alameda County’s existing commitments to human rights, justice and equity. We are relying on the next DA to pursue the transformative change that our communities deserve by: (1) opposing the death penalty; (2) holding law enforcement accountable when they break the law; (3) investing in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation; (4) treating children as children; and (5) committing to second chances and resentencing. It is of utmost importance that you choose a DA that is aligned with these reforms, and that the people be a part of the process.

Thank you for your attention to this matter,

Jennifer
