Tell District Attorney O'Malley: Charge Anthony Pirone in the Murder of Oscar Grant
For the past twelve years, Wanda Johnson has demanded justice for her son, Oscar Grant, who was murdered by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police. It’s been twelve years and Anthony Pirone, one of the officers who killed Oscar, still has not faced any charges.
An independent investigation into Grant’s death concluded that “the actions of Officer Pirone started a cascade of events that ultimately led to the shooting of [Oscar] Grant.” The investigation found that Pirone was largely responsible for the events that led to Oscar Grant’s death. Despite this overwhelming evidence, Almeda County has chosen not to hold Pirone responsible for his role in Oscar’s death — thus following in a long string of cities who refuse to hold police accountable for killing Black people.
Join Oscar’s family and activists in the Bay area in demanding that Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley charge former BART officer Anthony Pirone with murder.
Here is the Petition:
Dear ,
I am writing to ask you to reconsider your decision not to charge Anthony Pirone for his role in the muder of Oscar Grant.
Pirone was on the team of officers who arrived at Fruitvale Station on the morning of New Year’s Day in 2009. Pirone pulled Oscar from a BART train, punched him, kneed him in the face, and, ultimately, pinned Oscar to the ground and placed his knee on Oscar’s neck. Pirone also admitted to using both homophobic and racist slurs when he detained Oscar — further escalating the situation. An independent investigation into Grant’s death concluded that “the actions of Officer Pirone started a cascade of events that ultimately led to the shooting of [Oscar] Grant.” The investigation found that Pirone was largely responsible for the events that led to Oscar Grant’s death.
Despite this overwhelming evidence, Almeda County has chosen not to hold Pirone responsible for his role in Oscar’s death. You still have time to do the right thing and to pursue justice for Oscar Grant. I urge you to charge Anthony Pirone in the murder of Oscar Grant.
Sincerely,
Your name
