Tell the D.C. Council to Respect Black Votes!

Thousands of Black voters across the District voted overwhelmingly to pass Initiative 77, which would gradually rise the tipped minimum wage, which is currently just $3.89/hr, to the regular minimum wage of $15/hr PLUS tips for restaurant workers in D.C. The measure passed in the District by a 10 point margin, but Mayor Bowser, Chairman Mendelson and other members on the council want to subvert the will of the voters and have introduced legislation to repeal Initiative 77.

It is unconscionable for the D.C. city council to subvert the will of the voters and work to repeal Initiative 77. D.C. residents are already disenfranchised in Congress, so for our own city council to tell us our votes don’t matter is a slap in the face.

Black people have marched, fought, and died for the right to vote, so for the city council to throw our votes away on an issue that has a disproportionate impact us, is inexcusable. The people of D.C. deserve better. We deserve to have our voices heard and respected at the ballot box.
