#JusticeForJake: Send a letter to the Editor now

On Sunday, August 23, a Kenosha police officer shot Jacob Blake at least seven times in his back in front of his children. The 29-year-old father of five is now paralyzed from the waist down.

Justice can't wait. Write a letter to the editor to demand the immediate firing and arrest of the officer who attempted to murder Jake Blake.

Letters to the editor are one of the fastest, easiest, and most powerful ways to speak to a large audience about the things you care about.

Choose one of the points below as a starting point for your letter. Don’t try to cram multiple points into one letter — choosing just one is best. Write a 100-200 word (3 – 4 sentences) letter calling on Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian, District Attorney Michael Graveley, and Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul to immediately fire and arrest the cop who attempted to murder Jacob Blake.

PROMPTS:

  • We’ve witnessed police officers shoot and kill Black folks too many times. And each time, we feel the hurt. This is not normal. We refuse to stand idly by as police officers kill us with impunity. We need meaningful, comprehensive reform that will defend Black lives and end this endless cycle of police violence.

  • Black people are still reeling from the deaths of so many other Black folks at the hands of police violence this summer: Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, Tony McDade, and the thousands of other names we don’t know. The thousands of other Black people like Jacob Blake who just want to breathe and live free of the terror from state violence. Justice can't wait.

  • Kenosha officials are already attempting to stop our fight for justice. A city-wide curfew was put in place to stop anyone from rightfully protesting. And the Kenosha Police Department released a vague statement absolving their department of wrongdoing. Justice can't wait, and the racist cop who shot Jake at least seven times in front of his small children must be fired and arrested immediately.
