Color Of Change

1 in 5 Black women and 1 in 4 Black girls are survivors of sexual violence. #SAAM

April 2022 marks the 21st celebration of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and educating communities on consent. As Black women remain the least protected and most vulnerable to both sexual violence and the victim-blaming narratives associated with it, we’re recommitting ourselves to our #ProtectBlackSurvivors work and asking that you do the same.

Here’s a brief snapshot of the work we’ve been doing to #ProtectBlackSurvivors over the past few years:

  • In 2019, we pressured RCA/Sony to #DropRKelly after the harrowing Surviving R. Kelly docuseries aired.
  • In 2021, we pressured Spotify and Vh1 to deplatform T.I. & Tiny after more than 30 Black women shared stories of abuse.
  • In 2022, we relaunched our #ProtectBlackSurvivors Media Justice Campaign to hold media outlets accountable for unbiased, survivor-centered, and anti-racist reporting on gender-based violence.

So when we say protect Black women, we mean it. This SAAM, show solidarity and power our #ProtectBlackSurvivors organizing efforts!
