Voter registration declines won’t accelerate online system

Online voter registration will come after primary, governor’s office says

Gov. Phil Murphy does not plan to accelerate the implementation of an online voter registration system in the face of staggering COVID-19-fueled declines in new voter registration.

The state added just 8,002 new voters in April. That’s 72.6% less than the roughly 29,000 that registered in April 2016.

Murphy signed a law requiring the creation of an online voter registration system in January.

Officials within the New Jersey State Department must implement that system before this year’s general election, but online voter registration is scheduled to be implemented sometime after the primary, Murphy deputy press secretary Christine Lee said.
