Cancel the rent! The government stimulus package provided relief for homeowner mortgages and temporarily prevented evictions. But many people are not bringing in any income and cannot pay their rent. Almost 10 million people have filed for unemployment in recent weeks — the single largest mass-unemployment event ever recorded in the U.S. Unemployment claims nationwide have increased drastically. And the costs of additional food and supplies for protection during this virus has strained people’s wallets. During this time, Black people have been disproportionately impacted at every level -- and housing insecurity is no exception.

Call Governor Cuomo to let him know it’s time put forth a real plan to protect the vulnerable populations among us. Mortgage relief is not enough. Unless renters are protected and their rent forgiven, our communities will continue to bear the worst of the consequences of this public health emergency.
