Call NOW: Tell Congress We Need A Universal Basic Income
The outbreak of COVID-19 reminds us that many people live paycheck-to-paycheck when they shouldn’t have to. Many part-time, hourly or contract workers - who are disproportionately Black and low-income - are meeting economic hardship as hours are cut or reduced, leading to lost wages and a juggling of whether to pay for housing, medical care, and other need-based items. The response to the coronavirus has shown how society has consistently left the most vulnerable to fend for themselves, leaving Black communities to bear the brunt. The increasing need to “self-isolate” with an equally increasing need to pay expenses is why there should be a universal, basic income.
While a universal basic income is just one tool, it has many protections. An increasing concentration of wealth has led to a concentration of political power, leaving our folks with unmanageable financial burdens. For many, that has resulted in deep poverty. If a universal basic income is properly supported, it would reduce the concentration of wealth while chipping away at historical patterns of marginalization.
Not having enough resources to essentially pre-pay two weeks’ worth of basic living expenses is a social failing and moral crisis on its own. A universal basic income would ensure people’s economic vulnerability is not exploited because there would be a sense of protection. We are worthy of protection - not just in crisis but beyond. And we also should not be expected to help “reopen” the economy. We have a chance to demand our government enacts a guaranteed income to support our communities.
Here’s what we need you to do: once you dial or click the number above, our calling tool will connect you to the Congressional offices. Here's what to say when they answer:
- Hi, I'm [state your name], a member of Color Of Change and I am calling in regards to the need for a basic universal income in the wake of COVID-19.
- I am very concerned with the way Black and low-income people are expected to survive in this moment. I understand emergency cash payments are being debated, but that simply is not enough.
- The increasing need to “self-isolate” with an equally increasing need to pay expenses is why there should be a universal, basic income. A universal, basic income would not only help plug financial holes where necessary but eliminate the economic uncertainty of nearly 80% of workers.
- A deadly virus is spreading across the country, threatening my and your safety and the health of the broader public while there is much concern about a return to normal to make ends meet. I am asking you to enact a universal basic income for the betterment of all economically vulnerable populations.
- What actions will my representative take to resolve impending economic uncertainty amid the coronavirus?
