New York Mayor Bloomberg and NYPD Chief Kelly: End Stop and Frisk

scroll down to sign

NYPD's Stop and Frisk program targets Black and Latino residents — subjecting our communities to thousands of illegal stops, searches, and frisks each day that lead to unlawful arrests, constant harassment, and in some cases serious injury or death.

New York should use its vast police resources to implement safe, effective, and professional police practices that build community trust — not target people based on the color of their skin. Please join us in demanding that Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Commissioner Ray Kelly abolish Stop and Frisk.

Here's the letter we'll send to Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly on your behalf. You can add a personal comment using the box to the right.

Dear Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly,

For the past decade, New York City police have been racially profiling, illegally arresting, and roughing up hundreds of thousands of Black residents who were breaking no laws. As you know, Blacks and Latinos accounted for 89 percent of all police stops made in 2011.

Supporters of the NYPD's Stop and Frisk program claim its goal is to keep guns off the streets. Yet weapons were recovered in less than two percent of the stops made last year. The thing that Stop and Frisk does clearly accomplish is destroying one of the best crime-fighting tools police have — community trust.

Stop and Frisk unjustly targets and criminalizes thousands of Black folks every day, leaving them feeling humiliated and violated. I urge you to immediately put an end to New York City's discriminatory and unjust Stop and Frisk program.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
