Mitch McConnell: Don't Block the next SCOTUS appointment

Top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell has vowed to block any confirmation of President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, regardless of who that nominee is. By making this vow, McConnell is essentially ensuring that any senator who follows history, tradition and the constitution by considering the President’s nominees will find themselves in a fight for their career.

We have to fight this. With the docket so heavily loaded with high-stakes cases, we don’t have a choice. The Supreme Court cases currently in the docket include access to birth control and abortion services, the rights of workers to organize, the chance to halt unjust deportations of immigrants and the very existence of affirmative action as a legal policy. With so much on the line, we are launching a special rapid response campaign to fight for this nominee.

"The constitution is pretty clear about what is supposed to happen now. When there is a vacancy on the Supreme Court, the president is to nominate someone. The Senate is to consider that nomination," President Obama said just moments ago in his press conference. "Historically this has not been viewed as a question." As the Senate Majority Leader, Senator McConnell has a responsibility to lead his colleagues in this confirmation process. Instead, he is doing the exact opposite by promising to block any nomination and creating circumstances in which other Senate Republicans feel pressure to do the same.

This is not how our democracy works. Please sign our petition, urging Senator McConnell to do the job his constituents elected him to do.

Tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: the President's SCOTUS Nominee Deserves a Fair Hearing

    Dear Senator Mitch McConnell,

I am signing this petition to urge to you oversee a fair and timely confirmation process for the President's nominee(s) for the U.S. Supreme Court, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Your refusal to allow this confirmation process to proceed amounts to a breach of the duties you swore to undertake as an elected representative. I, along with the other signers of this petition, strongly encourage you to reconsider your current position, and to make a public statement acknowledging your plans to take part in the confirmation process.

    Signed,

    [Your Name]
