Gang Of Eight: We need immigration reform protecting ALL immigrants

For years, America's broken immigration system has been focused on detention and deportation largely at the expense of our communities.

Please join us in urging the U.S. Senate's "Gang of Eight" to put forward a just new immigration policy that recognizes the hardships and contributions of all new Americans and aspiring citizens.

Here's the letter we'll send to the members of the "Gang Of Eight," which includes Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Richard Durbin (D-IL). Dear Senators,

For years, America's broken immigration system has been focused on detention and deportation largely at the expense of our Black and Latino communities.

Just immigration reform legislation must consider the devastating impact the current system has had on immigrant families over the years — particularly those 11 million undocumented immigrants who live in the United States without the full protection of our legal system or a framework that would provide them with a path to participate in our democracy. Lack of institutional access, unreasonable financial burdens and the ever-present threat of deportations have robbed these communities of the promise of America.

Immigration reform that primarily focuses on enforcement through border patrol dragnets and the use of questionable government databases such as "Secure Communities" violates the basic promises of fairness in our legal system. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) has overwhelmingly targeted Blacks and Latinos through suspect methods that use racial profiling — separating families and continuing a pattern of distrust between our communities and law enforcement that jeopardizes all of our safety.

Instead of focusing on inhumane, costly and discriminatory enforcement strategies that further stigmatize our hyper-criminalized Black and Latino communities, I urge you to support just immigration reform that includes a roadmap to citizenship for America's 11 million undocumented immigrants, ends the "prison-to-deportation" pipeline and addresses the historic and systemic flaws in our broken immigration system.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
