Seattle police release audio in fatal shooting of 30-year-old mother in Sand Point

SEATTLE — Seattle police have released audio of an officer-involved shooting near Magnuson Park in which a 30-year-old mother was killed.

The audio file was captured by the officers’ dashcam video system, which was on in the patrol cars of both responding officers.

The full four minutes of audio can be heard here. It has the conversation between the officers as they discuss the history at the home and their concerns.

Seattle police said the incident began when they got a burglary call from Charleena Lyles, who lived in an apartment in the 6800 block of 62nd Street.

They said they sent two officers because they knew Lyles and were concerned for the officers' safety. When they arrived at the Brettler Family Place 3 apartments, they went up to the fourth floor, where they said Lyles confronted them with a knife.

"Both officers had to fire their service weapons, striking the individual," Seattle Police Detective Mark Jamieson said. "Unfortunately, it is a fatality."

Family of Lyle said several of Lyle's four children witnessed the shooting. They were not hurt and are staying with family members.

Lyle's family members also said she was pregnant when she was shot and that she had a history of mental illness, but insisted that she was no threat.
