President Obama and Congress: Cuts to Social Security won't help the economy

scroll down to sign

President Obama proposed a federal budget that would cut nearly $1 trillion to vital programs, including Social Security. The president's proposal does not represent the best vision for the country. Only investments in sound social programs, infrastructure, and job creation — not cuts — will lead to economic recovery.

Urge President Obama and Congress to take austerity measures like cuts to Social Security that unfairly attack the poor and middle class off the table and support a budget that helps get people back to work.

Here's the letter we'll send to President Obama and Congress on your behalf. Please feel free to leave a comment in the form.

Dear President Obama and members of Congress,

Proposing nearly $1 trillion in new spending cuts, including significant cuts to Social Security does not represent the best vision for this country.

Social Security is a self-funded program that does not affect the deficit. So, when it comes to fixing our economy, cutting Social Security benefits is not only heartless but also counterproductive. Eliminating the payroll tax on high earners alone could make Social Security solvent for years. For the Black community, the stakes couldn't be higher — we need a budget that offers solutions for what we require most: increased revenue from those who can afford it, a robust Social Security trust fund, and more jobs.

Ultimately, the best way to grow both the Social Security trust fund and our economy is by tackling our continued high unemployment and expanding the number of workers who are able to contribute to payroll taxes. Last week, the conservative myth of the benefits of "austerity" was blown apart when Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff's seminal paper on the subject was debunked by a University of Massachusetts graduate student. Slashing spending, starving vital government services and giving handouts to huge corporations is not the answer. We need investments in education and infrastructure to stimulate growth.

We know that the White House budget is just a proposal, which means there's still time to stop the cuts and restore needed investments. We urge you to do the right thing to avoid political disaster — end cuts to Social Security which unfairly shifts the burden of our deficit to poor and middle class people.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
